Fifteen-year-old Fern arrives at the home in the sweltering summer of 1970, pregnant, terrified and alone. Under the watchful eye of the stern Miss Wellwood, she meets a dozen other girls in the same predicament.
Rose, a hippie who insists she’s going to find a way to keep her baby and escape to a commune. And Zinnia, a budding musician who plans to marry her baby’s father. And Holly, a wisp of a girl, barely fourteen, mute and pregnant by no-one-knows-who.
Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them.
Then Fern meets a librarian who gives her an occult book about witchcraft, and power is in the hands of the girls for the first time in their lives.
But power can destroy as easily as it creates, and it’s never given freely. There’s always a price to be paid...and it’s usually paid in blood.
In Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, the author of How to Sell a Haunted House and The Final Girl Support Group delivers another searing, completely original novel and further cements his status as a “horror master” (NPR).
REVIEW:
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Just closed Witchcraft For Wayward Girls and I don’t even know what to say yet. I need to process this for 5-7 business days but I’m absolutely blown away.
UPDATE:
It has been 10 days since I finished this book and I have thought of it everyday since. This is BY FAR my favorite Grady Hendrix book and I have loved all his novels.
MIND BLOWN by the writing in this book and the topics covered especially as it relates to womanhood, sisterhood and motherhood. I was very unsure how this book would go for me as it covers womanhood and was written by a man.
I honestly believe the way that he described the topics above was so absolutely in alignment with my personal experiences within each category.
Grady's writing transported me directly into the experience of the Wayward girls and how scary/sad that era in time had to have been for many of them. This book made me feel so many emotions. I was grieving, enraged, scared and felt empowered all within the course of reading this story.
FEMININE RAGE WAS DEPICTED BEAUTIFULLY IN THIS BOOK.
Truly believe this is a book you have to experience on your own, but WOW. I'm absolutely mind blown STILL after finishing it 10 days ago.
Witchcraft For Wayward Girls is the type of book and overall story that I will never forget.
This book was LIFE ALTERING good.
1000/10 you should read this.
Special thank you to Grady Hendrix, Penguin Random House and Berkley Publishing for gifting me with this digital ARC copy through Netgalley! 🖤
